Dieting is all about mind set. With the right mind set, nothing will get in your way. But how do we find that mind set when life is distracting, chaotic, unpredictable, and stressful? Is it even possible to stay on track when life feels so out of control?
Covid-19 has really surfaced this topic, but even in ordinary times we face loss of jobs and loved ones, grief, and unsurmountable loads of stress. Fortunately, in such times we are capable to adapt our mind set to create ease. Dieting is a great tool for this.
When life feels out of control we have two choices with our diet; put nutrition down until life resumes to "normal", or use nutrition as a way to feel in control of something.
When we put our nutrition on hold during stressful times, we tend to choose food that sets us even further back. We grab convenient comfort food, which we all know is usually unhealthy. As a result we gain weight, we feel more sluggish, our energy falls short and our sleep is more broken. But lets say we decide to take control and start eating well. The outcome is, that with a nutritionally balanced diet we feel healthier, we have more energy, we sleep better, and neurologically we are more resilient to stress.
While good nutrition will make us feel better physically, the sense of empowerment is maybe even more significant. Controlling what you eat is an incredible tool in stressful times.
I've used this tool myself, and coached dozens of struggling clients in times of fear, loss, and grief. Each person who was willing to shift their perspective found great amounts of power in moments when life was spinning out of control. Your nutrition IS something you can control, and not just that, it's also one of the few things that ONLY YOU can control! No one can lose weight for you, no one can build muscle for you. Only you can make changes to your body!
