Dieting isn’t an easy thing to do, and if it was everyone would be the “Ideal” weight. As a Weight Loss & Nutrition Coach I have seen that mindset really is a make it or break it factor in how successful people are. I have noticed there are two kinds of people that come into my clinic; ones with a positive mindset and those who only see what they can’t have. Let’s discuss how these mindsets impact dieting.
Those who are excited by their results tend to hyper focus on just that. People with this positive mindset really experience and acknowledge how good they feel, how high their energy is, and they are really motivated by their weekly results (inches and weight lost). I’ve also noticed there is less cheating, and the dieting experience seems to be less stressful overall.
The people I see struggle most with dieting, are those who think a lot about all the foods they cannot have. I really see people suffer in this state. People with this perspective have more frequent slip up’s, which hinders their weekly results. This is discouraging and frustrating for them because the process of losing weight is slower and in their mind, dieting becomes more and more less worth the work. I notice that people with this mind set are constantly on an uphill battle because they are hyper focused on feeling deprived, and not noticing how good they feel or how great their weekly results might be.
So, what can you do with this information?
Whether you are mid-way through a diet experience, or are thinking about dieting for the first time, understanding that mindset is everything will be crucial for your results.
Coaches Tip: If you tend to focus on how deprived you feel, put a stop to each thought that enters your mind. Manipulate your perspective, for 3 straight weeks. Every time you catch yourself slipping into a negative train, stop the thought and redirect it. Don’t even allow yourself to continue the sentence in your mind and flip it to think of something positive. Ask yourself how your energy is, how you are sleeping, how shiny your hair is (another great side effect of a healthy diet), and how exciting your end goal is.
Turn your mindset into a habit by doing this for an extended period of time. Until one day you notice that you aren’t looking at what you can’t have. You will change your entire experience of dieting by doing this one simple thing. All it takes is experiencing the more positive things you go through when dieting, and as a result your goal will become more attainable and a part of your own reality.
