Starting any new diet or lifestyle isn’t an easy decision to make. Most of us take a lot of time waiting for something to change before we finally take any real action. A lot of this delay is usually based around the fact that we as humans don’t really believe in our own capability nearly as much as we should, and this lack in self confidence often comes down to timing. Knowing this, we can still plan for success!
How do we plan for success and know the timing is really right?
GET ORGANIZED WITH UPCOMING OBSTACLES & SCHEDULE IT IN
Look at your schedule over the next few weeks and foresee any major obstacles coming up. Events happening in the next three weeks such as Christmas, vacation, or family gatherings will be challenging in your first three weeks.
Know that these are all events you can successfully diet through, but in the first month of dieting you are still developing the confidence to know that you are the one in control. Once you get your feet wet, you will really learn a lot about who you are, what you are capable of, and how to devalue unhealthy food and increase the value in yourself.
Plan for any events coming up in the next month and schedule yourself to start your new diet the following week. Literally put this date in your calendar. If you plan to use a service to help you, go ahead and schedule the appointment. This will hold you accountable and give you a tangible date to work towards.
Use the time leading up to that day to celebrate that you are going to create a wonderful new change within your life. Enjoy the fact that you are putting yourself first, and you deserve to be proud. This is a big step and it’s worth getting excited about.
UNDERSTAND WHERE YOUR DECISION IS REALLY COMING FROM
If losing weight is something you’ve wanted to do for some time, but haven’t put the initiative in just yet, take some time to understand why.
We all make reasons and excuses for why we procrastinate. There are always going to be events, seasons, cocktails, friend’s socials, or self isolating to prevent us from taking action. Be mindful though, that all of these reasons are things we can actually diet through with the right mind set. Take the time to understand what is really preventing you from doing this, so you can overcome it.
As a coach, the most common things that prevent my clients from starting sooner, is fear and lack of confidence. Take some deep breaths and realize that you are worth walking toward your fears, and trust that you are capable.
KNOW YOU HAVE THE CONTROL
In 2020 we have learned a lot about lack of control and what that feels like. Many have seen loss, loss of loved ones, loss of employment, loss of access to entertainment, and many would say loss of freedoms. This is one of those perfect moments to do things in life that give you a sense of control.
Dieting is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to gain empowerment and control. Your body is the one and only thing that no one can change for you. You are truly the only one that can make changes here, and this is an empowering tool!
As we wade through a pandemic, or any of life’s chaotic curve balls; taking control back through diet is a powerful tool and coping strategy.
Most of my clients walk into my clinic very hesitant in their own capability to succeed with their weight. My favourite part of coaching is the moment my clients walk through the door and there is a shift in confidence. Finally, they believe they can! And so can you!
The hard point is, YOU are very capable, even when you feel you are not. Sometimes we just have to pretend we are confident, until the real confidence sets in.
